In 2004, we led about 250 volunteers in creating two large outdoor murals in western N.C. Part of the North Carolina Museum of Art's pARTnerships program, these projects were inspired by the NCMA's Defying Gravity exhibition. Wings and Things was completed in West Jefferson. This was the town's first public art mural, and the bulk of the work was completed by Ashe County citizens. Enthusiastic volunteers in Lenoir created the second mural, depicting an aerial view of their town with a locally well-known plane flying overhead. We were overwhelmed by the volunteers' enthusiasm and the excitement generated in both communities. |
