We began painting at the UNC Children's Hospital in the fall of 2001 before the doors even opened to the new facility. Eric Montross, a former basketball player at UNC, and his wife, Laura, came up with the idea of painting murals in the Children's Hospital to make it less of a scary place for the children who have to spend time there. They generously donated money, generated by Eric's yearly Father's Day basketball camp, to make this idea a reality. We started with eight treatment rooms, each with a different theme, and the project grew to include several waiting areas, hallways, Pediatric Radiology and the Neonatal Critical Care Center. It is exciting to see how positively the patients (and the doctors, nurses and parents) have responded to the artwork in the hospital, and we are happy to report that this is continuing to grow. |
